Synopsis:  Southern unsophisticate Elzetta Swan has gained the ability to see auras and the more lucrative ability to clean revenge curses from those auras. Embracing the gift faster than grass through a goose, Elzetta is about to finish her first year as a legally licensed bodywasher with a trendy new lifestyle and a countrified inner child that’s skipping all the way to the bank. But when a routine cleansing suddenly turns ugly, she begins to wonder if a powerful invoker has come to town—one who’s hooked on the rush of setting particularly nasty curses.

As Elzetta attempts to track down the culprit, she faces two fateful confrontations. Each will threaten her trendy new life and the hallelujah hankering she’s formed for the unlikeliest of urban white knights, but together those confrontations could do much worse. They could create in Elzetta a vengeful rage all her own.

Interview with Ms. Fisher:

Tell us about the story. Where did you get the inspiration for it? How long did it take you to write it? Do you share any traits or likes/ dislikes with your characters? Where is your story set? A fictional place or somewhere you’ve visited/ lived?

Curse Me Not introduces Appalachian unsophisticate Elzetta Swan who’s recently gained the ability to see auras and the more lucrative ability to clean revenge curses from those auras. Embracing the gift faster than grass through a goose, she’s about to finish her first year as a licensed “bodywasher” with a countrified inner child that’s skipping all the way to the bank. But when a routine cleansing suddenly turns ugly, Elzetta finds herself in over her head. She must face threats to both her trendy new life and the hallelujah hankering she’s formed for a reluctant—and way too sexy—urban white knight who’s crossed her path. Born of Fury

As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s The League series. I’ve had Born of Fury and just hadn’t gotten around to reading it. Well, until a couple of days ago. Given the fact I like to read and bed and I now have to wear glasses (grr…), it is difficult to hold a 700 page hardbound novel. Needless to say, I survived!

Born of Fury is the 7th book in the series. It’s the story of Dancer Hauk, the massive, lumbering Andarion.

Here’s the description:

The war is on…Born_of_Fury

Counted among the fiercest Andarion warriors ever born, Hauk is one of the five founding members of the Sentella- an organization that has declared war on the League that rules the Ichidian universe with an iron fist and terrifies it with an army of well-trained assassins. Hauk’s enemies are legion, but he fears nothing and no one. He will do whatever it takes to survive and protect his Sentella brethren.

Sumi Antaxas is one of the best assassins the League has ever trained. In her world, failure is not an option and she has never met a target she couldn’t execute. So when she’s assigned Hauk, she believes it’ll be a quick and easy mission.

But nothing is ever as simple as it seems, and Hauk is far better trained and skilled than his dossier shows. More than that, as she pursues him, she stumbles upon the key that will bring down not only Hauk, but the entire Sentella organization.

In the race to report her information, she is overtaken by enemies out to end her as effectively as she intends to end Hauk. Now her only key to survival is the one man she’s been sent to kill. And Hauk doesn’t trust her at all.

The only question is, will he help her to live… or send her to her grave. Continue reading “Born of Fury”

Sunday Snippet: Break Out

Unfortunately, I’ve been away from the blog for a bit. A close family friend passed away unexpectedly. It’s taken me some time to figure out why his death has really bothered me. I think it’s because he’s younger than my parents–too young to be gone already. Generally, for me, it’s been a wake up call that life is fleeting, and we need to cherish friends and family.

Okay, so enough with the philosophizing. What have I been reading? A novella that’s got a sexy, brooding vampire in outer space. Seriously. I just finished Break Out (Blood Hunter #1) by Nina Croft.

Description:Break_Out

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun! Continue reading “Sunday Snippet: Break Out”

My Year in Books 2014

Thanks to Goodreads for making this easy for me! Unfortunately, Netflix got in the way of me reading more. Plus (and this is a good thing), two years ago, I had surgery, which required an 8 week recovery. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time reading that summer!

I’m going to share my top reads and then I’m going to share my top Netflix shows. Let me know if anything on my list made yours as well!

My top M-M reads for 2014 (no particular order; these all received 5 star ratings from me):

  • A_Hunted_ManDaylight Again (Hell or High Water #3) by S.E. Jakes. If you haven’t read any of this series, you need to. Prophet and Tom rock! (Catch a Ghost is the first book in the series, FYI)
  • A Hunted Man (The Men of Halfway House #2) by Jaime Reese. Just love Cameron and Hunter.
  • Stars & Stripes (Cut & Run #6) by Abigail Roux. Actually, several books (Armed & Dangerous and Sticks & Stones, for example) in this series received high marks from me. Ty and Zane are one of my absolute favorite couples.

Publisher:  Champagne Book Group

Word Count: 28,000

Genre: Shape-shifter Paranormal

Content Warning: Adult content

Recommended Age: 18+

Synopsis:

Nicholas Lyons, chief physician to the Lyons clan of shape-shifters, has mourned the death of his promised lifemate until a rogue shapeshifter reports having seen her at an exotic animal sale. Accompanied by Marie Lyons who is no stranger to the dark side, her new lifemate Anthony, and the imperious Lady Bat, he embarks on a frantic search for Eve through the dangerous world of exotic animal trafficking.

Eve, whose first memories are of recovering from an injury at an isolated animal refuge, has lived through a succession of owners in a world filled with cages and cruelty. When Eve meets Marie at the exotic animal sale, she begins to have flashes of a different life – a life in which she was something other than feline. Her last sale, however, has landed her as prey to exotic animal hunters and the clock is ticking.

My Thoughts:

Finding Eve is the second novella in a cat shifter PNR series. I read this story without having read the first novella. I was intrigued by the description and was curious about the cat shifters. I enjoyed reading about a shifter group other than wolves; although, I found myself having difficulty connecting with Eve or Nicholas. To me, Marie stood out as the dominant female character; Eve came off as very broken – so much so I wasn’t sure she would have a happy ending. When things do progress for her and Nicholas, they move quickly (especially when she had spent so much time in cat form). I would have enjoyed more of a build-up.

If you are going to read this, I would recommend reading the stories in order (and not skipping). I think it would have given me background in the cat culture and given me more perspective on The People, Anthony, and Lady Bat so that as a reader I would have had a vested interest in what happened to the characters.

This is a short, easy read with a unique take on PNR. My rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.
