I’ve had the desire to travel, which has been tough because of the pandemic. But that hasn’t stopped me from listening to Road Trip radio on Sirius-XM. One of the songs I enjoy hearing is I’ve Been Everywhere by Johnny Cash (it definitely doesn’t hurt that I’m a Johnny Cash fan).
I decided to take a closer look at the lyrics to his song. After all, he sings through the places so quickly, it’s hard to keep track! Using lyricfind I started making notes of the places mentioned by Cash. As I went through the list, I quickly realized that I haven’t been even close to everywhere!
The states mentioned in the song:
- Alaska
- Colorado
- Idaho
- Louisiana
- Minnesota
- Nebraska
- Oklahoma
- Tennessee
- Washington
I almost hate to admit this, but I’ve only been to Colorado and Tennessee. I’ve lived in Colorado so that makes up for some of my lack of travel, right?!
States with the most number of cities/towns mentioned:
- Iowa
- Massachusetts
- Texas
- Arkansas
- California
- Florida
- Kansas
- New York
- North Dakota
- Tennessee
I’ve done a little better on this list! Even looking at some of the places mentioned (not in the states named above), I’ve been to a few more.
In the stanza where Cash begins singing the names of places, I’m not fairing so well. He sings, “I’ve been to Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota, Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota…” I’ve been through Chicago but haven’t spent any notable time there so I’m not counting it.

So I’m thinking I need to tackle some road trips when traveling gets back to normal, or maybe a new normal.
Have you been everywhere? Any recommendations of where I should start? Please let me know in the comments!
Vancouver, Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, and Las Vegas … those have been my “go to’s” beyond life’s usual, mundane step throughs.

If you go to Vancouver and Seattle, make a stop in Victoria… beautiful city! And take the ferry back to Seattle… gorgeous trip!
I love going to Toronto… it’s like New York, but a more livable scale, and filled with nicer people! Check out the BATA shoe museum, it’s wonderful! It’s not that far to drive, and you can stop by Corning, NY and visit the glass museum there! And you can stop at Niagara Falls, but stay on the Canadian side, it is SO much nicer!
Wendy and I did a driving tour of Nova Scotia… different bed and breakfast each night… what fun!
So many places to see and go!
