But it’s a bit hard to launch a band without a singer. Enter JJ Keswick.
JJ is everything Jack isn’t: rich, confident and popular. He also happens to be one of the best singers Jack has ever heard.
Jack reluctantly lets JJ into his band and into his life. The spark between them in the practice studio grows into something neither of them were expecting – a love that threatens to tear their lives apart.

Interview with Victoria:
Tell us about the story. Where did you get the inspiration for it?
I absolutely adore music, to the point where 11 of my tattoos are directly linked to my favourite bands. Musicians are some of my favourite people in the world and I’m lucky to know some really talented guitarists, singers and songwriters. I also use music a lot when I’m writing, I tend to tell people that I know what a novel sounds like before I write it. I create a playlist for each novel before I even start writing it. So, it was only natural that I’d write about musicians one day!
I wanted to write about kids who love music as much as I do, who understand how a really great band can change your life. Then I thought, why not have these kids go on to become one of those bands? That’s how “Fake It” was born!
How long did it take you to write it?
I cheated a bit and started writing “Fake It” in 2014, while I was still working on the last book in my Red Sun Rises series. So officially, it took me about 18 months to write this book, but I had to take a break to finish the last RSR book.
Do you share any traits or likes/ dislikes with your characters?
I think I do share a lot of traits with Jack, one of the main characters and the narrator of “Fake It”. He’s fairly quiet, but he loves music and has a few very close friends who love music just as much as he does. Plus, Jack has a friend called Jessica, who’s actually based on a real (wonderful) girl and a close friend of mine, so we do have her in common!
Where is your story set? A fictional place or somewhere you’ve visited/ lived?
“Fake It” is set in Wayville, which is a small, fictional town in America. It’s actually named after Gerard Way, one of my favourite musicians! I’ve been lucky enough to visit a few different places in America and I’m sure there’s a town a lot like Wayville, nestled away somewhere…
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been making up stories for as long as I can remember, but didn’t start writing seriously until I was 15.
What is your favorite genre to write and to read?
I’m a YA writer and I absolutely adore reading YA (with some exceptions). I love YA paranormal romance, but have been known to read coming-of-age novels and contemporary romance, when the mood strikes me.
What is the last book you read?
Anne Rice’s “Prince Lestat”. I’m a big fan of the Vampire Chronicles.
What is the last movie you saw?
“The Revenant” – didn’t like it much!
Are we more likely to catch you reading a paperback book or on an e-reader?
That depends on when you catch me – I tend to read paperbacks at home, and use an e-reader when I’m travelling.
What is your idea of the perfect day?
One where I don’t have to get dressed! I would live in pyjamas if I could.
What is your preference: coffee, tea, or soda?
I’m all about the soda! Right now my favourite is Cherry Pepsi Max.
