On the Run Tour

Today I welcome Michael Mandrake to the blog! He’s promoting On the Run. Be sure to check out the entire post…he’s included an excerpt, and I had the opportunity to interview him.

Book One of the PROTEKT SERIESOntheRun

Living a double life is very dangerous…

Even more so when higher authorities and military agencies are envious of the position you hold and the money you make.

In the life of a PROTEKT agent, intelligence is key and the knowledge of guns must be second nature. Their sole mission—to get the job done swiftly with little mistakes. They’re paid well to handle all situations and hired to do things their own way, often disregarding the laws. Chief Wes gives them this freedom because being ruthless is usually required to finish the job.

When the world’s governments have run out of options, they request the assistance of PROTEKT to handle the situations no one else is able to solve. Only one thing could stand in the way of the agents success—his or her own desires for permanent companionship.

Tagline: Who would’ve thought that a British hit man would fall in lust at first sight with an American felon? This desire could become deadly for both.

Blurb: Aiden Moriarty is a Florida ‘herbalist’ who developed a performance enhancing drug many athletes have used. One of them is baseball star Ivan Salerno, who was caught using the drugs and is now on the brink of getting suspended. Because of Ivan’s connections with a rogue mob boss, Aiden is taken into a witness protection program, working along with baseball higher ups until he testifies.

The mob boss, Augustine Ora, has hired former British military officer and his best hitman, Devlin ‘Brit’ Crawford, to do the job. Ora has instructed Devlin to go to Miami, kidnap Aiden and take him to the local airport to be transported to Havana ,Cuba, to be executed by Ora’s top officers.

However, when Devlin receives the email, the pictures of the blue-eyed felon catch his eye and he is moved to go in a different direction. Instead of delivering Aiden to the airport, he has thoughts of taking him away and saving him from Ora’s wrath.

This move puts him, Aiden, as well as his assistant Miranda Ashley in huge danger. Will Devlin keep Aiden safe despite the odds or will he fail, causing Ora and his men come after him?

“Um.” Aiden cleared his throat, hoping Miranda didn’t have a quick trigger finger. “I know it’s a risk what you’re doinga huge onebut I can make it worth your while. I really can. And, uh, after the talk we had in the car

“You were thinking we could have something, hmm?”

Aiden swallowed hard and looked down at his feet. He clasped his hands together as if he was praying for something. “We could if you don’t deliver me to Ora.”

“Aw, isn’t that so cute, D? The American is begging you to spare him. He’s so adorable. Don’t let that overweight son of a bitch win, yeah? You need someone and hell, you’ve been saying how much you’ve wanted to get away from Ora for a while.”

“True, very true. See, Aiden? It’s not really all about you. My bird is right when she says I need a chap in my life. However, my reason for keeping you away is more about being a rebel. I haven’t been happy with the way Ora does things for quite a while. Additionally, I’d like to see that cheater Salerno go down in flames, because I don’t really like cheaters.”

“Neither do I,” Aiden responded.

“But you helped these men get ahead with drugs so, obviously, you take no real issue with it.”

“Yeah I do.” Aiden laughed nervously. “I just wanted to do something different and make some cash. That’s all. Hey, if you keep me alive, you can help me expose him and Engel, too. I’ve got no doubt the guy may be working for Oraor even Salerno.”

“You might be right there, but the question still remains…” The man walked closer to Aiden, still mostly naked. He dragged his finger over Aiden’s forehead and twirled one of his curls around the tip. “Is the cause to bring a cheater down and have a goodlooking American on my arm worth my life and the money Ora has offered me?”

Aiden’s eyes met his kidnapper’s deep brown gaze. His breath caught in his chest while he got lost in the man’s heated stare. His heart thumped against his ribs and his cock, already hard, strained in his underwear. He stuttered, “II’d say, yeah.”

Top Ten Tuesday: Wolf/ Shifter Romance Reads

This week’s theme for Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie—the blogger gets to choose the topic. I’ve been reading a lot of PNR lately so I wanted something along those lines. I checked out some of the lists on Goodreads and got my idea.

I’m doing a Top Ten of the Best Wolf/ Shifter Books that I’ve read (most of these, if not all, are going to be romance).

toptentuesday

Be sure to stop by The Broke and the Bookish…see what others have chosen.

What are your thoughts? Have you read any of these?? (By the way, they are listed in no particular order.)

Top Ten Tuesday Wolf/ Shifter (Romance) Reads

  1. Moon Called (Mercy Thompson #1)  by Patricia Briggs. Mercy shifts into a coyote in this series. There are also a host of paranormal characters, too.
  2. Bitten (Women of the Otherworld #1) by Kelley Armstrong. In this series, Elena Michaels is a werewolf.
  3. Magic Bites (Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews. Can’t skip over Curran, the mighty lion shifter!
  4. Pride Mates (Shifters Unbound #1) by Jennifer Ashley. Liam’s the shifter in this book, and wouldn’t you know I don’t remember his animal?? Someone help me out here, please 🙂 I want to say cats, but I’m not sure.
  5. How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf #1) by Molly Harper. This was very entertaining, and obviously, the title tells you the kind of shifter. LOL
  6. Nightshade (Nightshade #1) by Andrea Creamer. More wolves in this one.
  7. Bear Necessities (Halle Shifters #1) by Dana Marie Bell. If you guessed bears, you’d be right!
  8. Crux (Southern Arcana #1) by Moira Rogers. Magic and shifters abound in this one. Great series if you haven’t checked it out.
  9. The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld #1) by Gena Showalter. Maddox isn’t technically a shifter, but he is filled with a demon. Hopefully that’s close enough to count!
  10. Scent of Darkness (Darkness Chosen #1) by Christina Dodd. Another wolf (I seem to like these!)
  11. Hotter after Midnight (Midnight #1) by Cynthia Eden. Colin’s a sexy wolf shifter.
  12. Moonlight (Moon #1) by Lisa Kessler. Adam’s one hot werewolf!
  13. Hakan/ Severin (Bayou Heat #11-12) by Alexandra Ivy. This whole series is hot…lots of puma shifters!

Awesome PNR Read: Shadows Strike

What is the measure of a good read? In my opinion, a book that sticks with you after you’ve finished it. This morning I Shadows_Strikefinished reading Shadows Strike (Immortal Guardians #6) by Dianne Duvall. The Immortal Guardian series is one of my absolute favorite PNR series. I always look forward to the next release (how soon is the next book coming out???). Shadows Strike is Ethan and Heather’s story. I have to say that I completely enjoyed it.

And, even though I finished the book, this afternoon I found myself thinking about the Immortal Guardians and their war against one Other in particular. I just loved how Ethan and Heather came together, and how Seth, David, Zach and the others battle huge numbers of vampires that were attacking military bases in an attempt to trigger World War III.

I wondered how the chicken dinner went with Heather’s father. She and Ethan dumped a lot of news on him in a short amount of time. I think he will truly welcome Ethan a son-in-law. Plus, I can’t wait for a demo from Heather *wink wink*

Blurb:

U.S. law enforcement agent Heather Lane can read minds. But not the future. The dream of battle and blood that recurs every night must be a fluke, some obscure terror from her own mind. What its significance might be, she can’t guess: an attack from seven psychotic vampires at once, only separated from nightmare by an eighth very different immortal. A handsome, brave man fighting at her side, a man she misses when she wakes. Continue reading “Awesome PNR Read: Shadows Strike”

Wednesday Briefs: Bear to Bear, Chapter 2

This week it’s back to Trooper Jared Kingsley and the shapeshifter he managed to hit. Are you reading for the next chapter?? Avery sure hopes so!

This week’s prompt was “Just hold me, please.” I don’t think you’ll have too much trouble spotting it. And, yes, my flash comes in below the 1000 word limit. Yay!

Without further delay…

Bear to Bear, Chapter 2

by

Avery Dawes

Coal Carter groaned long and low as his mind slowly returned to consciousness. He lay there—wherever there might be—eyes closed, not wanting to face the drama which awaited him.

Last thing he remembered was being chased by a mountain lion. Normally, whenever he ran across a big cat, they avoided each other. This time, though, the female lion was pissed about something and decided to take her aggravation out on Coal—in his bear form. Damn women.

Rain splashed against his naked body, rousing him further. Guess I’m back in human form. But what’s with all this pain?

“What in the hell…” an unknown tenor voice asked. “Fuck…how am I supposed to call this in?”

Footsteps sounded close to Coal’s head.

He cracked his eyelids. After a moment he was able to take in the sight of wet pavement and black boots. His eyes followed those boots to dark green trousers, fitted snuggly against muscular thighs. Quit checking him out! Tilting his head, his eyes continued their journey. Skip the package, Coal, now’s not the time. Gun belt with an empty holster. Rut roh. He checked the man’s hands. Yep, there it was—a pistol gripped securely in the man’s left hand. Continue reading “Wednesday Briefs: Bear to Bear, Chapter 2”

Monday Flash Fiction: The Mural

Now, Avery’s story.

The Mural

I sprinted for the safety of my car. The little old Honda chugged along at best, but had been my refuge on more than one occasion. I locked the doors and breathed a short sigh. At least my asshole father only assaulted me with words, not his fists.

This wasn’t the first time we’d had issues. Thank goodness for Mom. She did her best to keep Dad in check—she was the reason I wasn’t homeless. When she was at work, however, I was at his mercy. This morning was one of those times.

I bit my lip to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. I fought to still my trembling hands as I retrieved my cell. I had to call Dan. Needed to hear his strong, soothing voice. Continue reading “Monday Flash Fiction: The Mural”

An Intense Read: 13 Hours

Normally, I’d say contracting an illness is a bad thing, but this time it forced me to lay low, which allowed me plenty of time to read. (There’s a point coming, I promise!) I decided I would read 13 Hours. I’m ashamed to say the first time I heard about it is when I saw the movie trailer in the theater. I’m the kind of person who likes to read the book before seeing the movie. I’m also the kind of person who doesn’t pay close attention to the news. In my opinion, they tend to sensationalize the bad stuff and not give credit or promote the good stuff. Again, just my opinion.

So, after all of that…let’s get to the book. It’s as far from political as you can get. It’s purely told from the point of the operators—the “boots on the ground.” I should give the full title because it is a very apt summary of the book. 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi.

Here’s the description:

13 HOURS presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked 13_Hoursthe US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack.

13 HOURS sets the record straight on what happened during a night that has been shrouded in mystery and controversy. Written by New York Times bestselling author Mitchell Zuckoff, this riveting book takes readers into the action-packed story of heroes who laid their lives on the line for one another, for their countrymen, and for their country.

13 HOURS is a stunning, eye-opening, and intense book–but most importantly, it is the truth. The story of what happened to these men–and what they accomplished–is unforgettable. Continue reading “An Intense Read: 13 Hours”

It has been weeks since Curtis first saw the young waiter with the haunted eyes. No matter how often he went to the café to find the right opportunity to introduce himself, that moment simply did not come that quickly.

Joseph was aware of the gentle giant who quietly came to have his lunch and then left day after day. Fearing his father’s wrath and under his ever watchful eyes, he made no moves nor overtures. Until one day when the other man approaches to him…

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | GoodReads

Excerpt (start of Chapter 1):

A month had passed since Curtis first saw the waiter. He wasn’t sure whether he should continue going to the café each day for lunch because he hadn’t found the courage to approach the guy. He was worried people had begun to notice and felt nervous that his behavior was stalkerish. He tried to appear as though he went there for the good food only and not for the man himself. The waiter was certainly cute, but more than that drew Curtis in. The sadness that overlaid the sweetness caught his attention and held it. That was what kept him coming back again and again.
