Wednesday Briefs: A River Rendezvous

Avery is back with another standalone flash fiction piece. Are you excited? This one is an historical M-M romance (hopefully there is such a thing!). I’ve been slacking on writing a bit, but it was fun working on this piece. It actually came together very quickly. Yay!

For a quick refresher, Wednesday Briefs have to be 500-1000 words in length and include a prompt. Avery used two prompts this week: a thunderstorm and a waterfall. Hope you enjoy the soldiers!

A River Rendezvous

by Avery Dawes

Marching was vastly overrated, Henry decided, especially beneath a blistering sun. And they’d been at it all day. Dinner—whatever they managed to scrounge—and then into his bedroll. Well, he amended, after he took a bath. At this rate, the Union soldiers would smell him before they ever caught sight of him. Henry hadn’t bathed in two days. Not since the thunderstorm that drenched his clothes and made his socks squish in his shoes.

“Keep up, Henry, we’re almost there.” Lt. Robertson, his commanding officer and former neighbor, gave him a friendly shove. “I know it’s been a long day.”

“Sorry, sir…” His voice drifted off. The past week had been particularly difficult for him. His younger brother passed after taking a round in the shoulder. The doctors tried to save him, but infection had overtaken his body. There was nothing that could be done. I’m filling in that blank with gay men in uniform. Woot woot! So all the books below are from the M-M Genre and include either a gay fire fighter, paramedic, police officer, US Marshal, Navy SEAL, etc.

As I started putting my list together, I didn’t realize I was going to have so many choices. It’s going to be tough to pick just 10!

Be sure to drop a comment and let me know if you’ve read any of the books on my list and what you think *smiles* And be sure to head over to the The Broke and the Bookish to visit the other bloggers who are participating!

My Top Ten Books with LGBT Men in Uniform

1. Hot Head (Head #1) by Damon Suede. This read features Brooklyn firefighter Griff Muir who has the “hots” (heh, heh–I couldn’t resist) for his best friend Dante Anastagio.

2. Hard Fall (Deputy Joe #1) by James Buchanan. This read has Deputy Joe Peterson “falling” (sorry, I’m full of bad puns tonight) for ex-con Kabe Varghese.

3. Private Eye (Liaisons #1) by S.E. Culpepper. P.I. Rafe Bridges is all about helping straight cop Jeremy Halliday.

4. A Sinner Born (Brooklyn Sinners #3) by Avril Ashton. It was hard to pick just one book in this series. Kane Ashby is a hunky Marshal and Syren Rua is damaged and has a hot panty fetish. ‘Nuff said!

5. The Rebuilding Year (#1) by Kaje Harper. This one features former fire fighter Ryan Ward and John Barrett. Definitely a good story! Continue reading “Top Ten Books with Men in Uniform (M-M)”

Excerpt:

I ducked behind the brick wall just before a beer bottle whizzed past my head, exploding into shards of brown glass behind me.

“You have got to be kidding me,” I yelled, and peeked over the wall. He was running. I caught sight of him just as he rounded the far corner of the alley. “Get back here, Gallas!” Continue reading “Chasing Midnight Book Blitz”

The Demise of Bobby & Clyde

Title:  The Demise of Bobby & Clyde (Bennett Bay story)The_Demise_Bobby_Clyde

Author:  Stephen del Mar

Genre: M-M Suspense/ Occult with some Romance

Length:  26 pages

Blurb:

Clyde really loved Bobby. He wanted to give his man the world. He thought robbing a bank would be the way to do it. That was his first mistake. The Demise of Bobby and Clyde is a short ghost story set in the boondocks of Big Cypress County, Florida. A classic haunted house tale with a couple of gay bad boys. Warning: It doesn’t end well for the guys, but there is a lot of ever after.

This story is part of Stephen del Mar’s Stories from Bennett Bay collection.

* * * *

If I had to pick three words to describe this read, they would be:

  • Spooky
  • Clever
  • Intriguing

I downloaded this story from Amazon (you can find it here) and got right to reading. It didn’t take me long since it’s a short story, but Mr. del Mar keep me flipping the pages on my Kindle. I liked Bobby and Clyde as characters. I felt for the guys and the situation they found themselves in.

The Gothic mansion was downright creepy! It gave me shivers, and I feared for what was going to happen next.

I’m going to try and do this without spoiling anything, but the chandelier incident was funny and tragic. The ending was absolutely perfect!

A fun, entertaining read with a spooky haunted house and two guys who only seem to have bad luck. Continue reading “The Demise of Bobby & Clyde”

Burning Down the House

by

Avery Dawes

Senior Patrolman Aidan Murphy stared at his reflection. Brass polished. Uniform neat and crisply pressed. Boots shined. All he wanted was a quiet and routine Friday night, his last night patrolling the streets. On Monday, he would don a suit and tie and begin his new position as Property Crimes Detective.

“Babe, hurry up! I’ve got your dinner packed. You need to go, or you’ll be late.”

Aidan grinned. His boyfriend had him so spoiled. Chas was his personal clock, always making sure he was on time. He buckled his gun belt, slid the portable radio into its holder, and headed down the hallway.

“Thanks, darling! You rock, as usual.” Aidan leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to Chas’s lips. He picked up the cooler and turned toward the door. Continue reading “Wednesday Briefs Flash with Fire”
