I just finished reading the latest edition to the men of Halfway House, A Restored Man. Jamie Reese has written a home run (sorry for the baseball reference, I know it should be a car one instead) with this one. This is book number three in the series, and in my opinion, the best of the three.
A Restored Man is Cole’s story. If you recall from the previous read, Cole comes in at the end. He is at the HH after serving a prison term for grand theft auto. As part of his rehab, he gets a job working for Aidan’s brother, Ty, at his car shop (repair, restoration, custom work of all kinds).
Before I get too far into my thoughts, here’s the blurb:
Cole Renzo thinks his greatest challenge is to behave for the remainder of his term at Halfway House. Until he meets his new boss, Ty Calloway, a man who ticks off every box on Cole’s list of interests.
A sought-after restorer and customizer of exotic and collectible cars, Ty had enough confidence to command what he wanted in life, until one fateful night changed everything. Almost two years later, he’s slowly rebuilding his life with great control. He’s defied the odds and works tirelessly to be the man he once was—but he still feels broken.
Cole’s candor and unfiltered personality awaken Ty’s barely-remembered desire to greet each new day with a smile, while Ty’s unwavering acceptance of Cole’s quirks and brash humor makes Cole feel as if he fits in for the first time in far too long. When a nemesis threatens Ty’s personal restoration and the things he holds dear, Cole is determined to protect their relationship, even if that means sacrificing everything he’s worked so hard to achieve.
But Ty will have to let his guard down, surrender control, and admit he needs Cole first, even if that puts himself at risk of breaking beyond repair.
This ebook is 385 pages of yummy Cole and Ty goodness. Both of the guys have their issues, and it just makes them more lovable, it makes you as the reader cheer for them that much harder. Of course, we got to see glimpses of Matt and Julian. Cole loved to devil Julian. Some of those scenes had me rolling! Of course, there is good reason why Cole finds himself needing to aggravate J, but you’ll have to read to find out why.
Although, at 5% Julian tries to give Cole some good advice. Readers learn right from the start that Cole’s mouth tends to get him into a lot of trouble. He doesn’t always mean what he says, it just comes out all wrong.
“Before you speak, just pause. Okay?”
Cole tried to nod.
“Take a moment to play back what you’re going to say. If it sounds iffy, keep your trap shut and don’t say it. Got it?”
“But what if it all sounds fine to me?” Cole asked.
Julian shook his head and nudged Cole toward the back door. “Then I’ll pray for you.”
Aidan was the reason for the above conversation. I certainly can’t leave him out. As Ty’s older, protective brother, he’s very involved in the story. It is nice that toward the end, we get to see a softer side of Aidan (can you believe no scowling or sneering or sarcasm?? or as Cole said at one point “the asshole vibe seeping out of his pores” ). Of course, most of those times involved Jessie. (I’m hoping his is the next story in the series *fingers crossed*). Jeff was a great supporting character. He fit right in and accepted Cole from the start. So many things clicked for me with this read. Just. Loved. It.
I wanted to share one conversation between Cole, Ty, and Aidan at 45%:
Cole wiped his hands on the towel and slung it over his shoulder. He crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. “If he was going to hit me again, he would have done it already. I think he’s warming up to the idea of me being his future brother-in-law.”
“I don’t think there’s enough liquor in the world to soften that blow,” Aidan mumbled.
Aidan looked over to Ty with a poor attempt at a scowl.
Ty laughed harder. “He’ll grow on you.”
“Like mold,” Aidan responded.
Ty couldn’t stop laughing.
