The Backup Boyfriend

My latest M-M read: The Backup Boyfriend by River Jaymes.

I’ve been on a reading frenzy of late. My muse is noticeably absent so I’m hoping reading will help me get back on track. It’s also been a good thing since I haven’t been feeling well…reading is a good distraction.

I stumbled upon this gay-for-you romance on Amazon (for those of you who follow my blog, you know I’m a fan of GFY reads). The reviews looked good so I though I would give it a shot. I was not disappointed.

Here’s the blurb:

The_Backup_BoyfriendProfessionally, Dr. Alec Johnson has almost reached his goals. As this year’s recipient of a humanitarian award with his ex, Dr. Tyler Hall, Alec’s work with the homeless is about to be recognized. Unfortunately, his personal life sucks because now he has to attend several events alongside Tyler—with his ex’s new boyfriend in tow. In an attempt to lift his mood and break out of his rut, Alec purchases a motorcycle he has no idea how to start.

Dylan Booth doesn’t have time for Dr. Clueless and his fickle 1964 Harley, but the cocky mechanic can’t say no to the request for help. Having spent his teen years on the streets, and losing his best friend to HIV, Dylan decides teaching the do-gooder how to ride is the least he can do. But watching Alec flounder in his ex’s company throws Dylan into protector mode, and the confirmed hetero introduces himself as Alec’s new boyfriend.

The ex suspects Dylan is lying.

Alec claims Dylan’s plan is insane.

And Dylan’s not sure he can fake being gay.

But Dylan’s a master bullshitter, and the phony PDA soon turns ultra-hot. Alec can’t afford to get attached, and Dylan’s learned everyone eventually leaves. Unfortunately, playing the backup boyfriend is starting to feel way too real…

I just loved Alec and Dylan. The book opens with Alec, trying desperately to get over his ex, Tyler. Alec figured after 2 years together, he and Tyler would be getting married. Well, not so much…

Enter Alec’s answer to get over Tyler and his “old” life: a vintage Harley Davidson with an attitude. Oh, and did I mention Alec has no clue how to ride?

At least Alec’s friend, Noah (huge drama queen who is also annoying and lovable) knows of an excellent mechanic, Dylan. Unfortunately, Dylan happens to be straight and has had one heck of a tough life (yes, lots of baggage, but it explains a lot about his person and why he does what he does).

After meeting Tyler and his new hottie, Dylan kicks into protector mode and defends Alec when he’s rendered temporarily mute (that tends to happen around Tyler). Needless to say, they end up attending Noah’s party as a “pretend” couple. Too bad Dylan’s been wondering about Alec’s lips and how the man would taste. Well, no spoilers here, but some yummy action follows.

All is not well with the guys, though. Throw in some angst, lack of communication, and both of the guys having issues to deal with … you get the picture. Don’t worry, there are plenty of hot, sexy scenes between the two.

The ending is awesome, though. I really liked the epilogue. *wink* Oh, and not because of the sex. You’ll have to read to find out what, exactly.

A solid 4 out of 5 stars.

Book # 2 is Tyler’s story with his former love, Memphis. The Boyfriend Mandate is now available.
